Automatic Classification of Sunspot Groups for Space Weather Analysis

چکیده
The sun is the unlimited energy source for life on the earth. However, besides as the energy source, the sun also gives disruptions to the universe around the earth and also to the life on the earth. Sources of the disruptions from the sun are flares and Coronal Mass Ejection/CME. Both of those disruptions in general come from group of sunspots. With the growing of dependency of human life with modern technology, either facility on the surface of the earth or in universe around the earth, the disruptions from the sun should be anticipated. In order to know the complexity level of sunspot groups and their activity, Modified-Zurich sunspot classification is used. Image of sunspots can be taken using the Michelson Doppler Imager instrument (MDI) Continuum / SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory). This research was conducted on the automatic classification of sunspot group that can be used to analyze the space weather conditions and provide information to the public. There are two stages to classify sunspot groups namely feature extraction and pattern recognition. For feature extraction, we used digital image processing to get features of sunspot group, and for pattern recognition, we used artificial neural network. We compared 3 methods of artificial neural networks to get the best result of classification namely backpropagation, probabilistic and combination between self-organizing map and k-nearest neighbor. Among three of them, probabilistic neural network gave the best classification result.

Increasing Lifetime of Recurrent Sunspot Groups within the Greenwich Photoheliographic Results
Long-lived (>20 days) sunspot groups extracted from the Greenwich Photoheliographic Results (GPR) are examined for evidence of decadal change. The problem of identifying sunspot groups which are observed on consecutive solar rotations (recurrent sunspot groups) is tackled by first constructing manually an example dataset of recurrent sunspot groups and then using machine learning to generalise ...
متن کاملForty two years counting spots: Solar observations by D.E. Hadden during 1890–1931 revisited
We have recovered the sunspot observations made by David E. Hadden during 1890–1931 from Alta, Iowa. We have digitized the available data published by Hadden in different astronomical journals. This data series have been analyzed and compared with the standard sunspot number series. Moreover, we provide additional information on two great sunspot groups, previously not described, that originate...
متن کاملSome Peculiarities in Longitude Distribution of Sunspot Groups over Last Four Eleven-year Solar Cycles
This paper considers a longitude distribution of sunspot groups over 1982–2013, using data from the National Geophysical Data Center (Boulder, USA). The space-time distribution of sunspot groups is analyzed in coordinate sectors calculated from heliographic longitudes of the groups. A longitude extent of a coordinate sector is compared to the average size of one active region (30–40°). Then, in...
متن کاملAutomatic classification of Non-alcoholic fatty liver using texture features from ultrasound images
Background: Accurate and early detection of non-alcoholic fatty liver, which is a major cause of chronic diseases is very important and is vital to prevent the complications associated with this disease. Ultrasound of the liver is the most common and widely performed method of diagnosing fatty liver. However, due to the low quality of ultrasound images, the need for an automatic and intelligent...
متن کاملAutomatic Short-term Solar Flare Prediction Using Machine Learning and Sunspot Associations
In this paper, a machine learning-based system that could provide automated short-term solar flares prediction is presented. This system accepts two sets of inputs: McIntosh classification of sunspot groups and solar cycle data. In order to establish a correlation between solar flares and sunspot groups, the system explores the publicly available solar catalogues from the National Geophysical D...
